Fall Closet Staple: Leopard

With a couple weeks left of fall, I just had to share one of my favorite closet staples...LEOPARD! I like to say that a little leopard goes a long way. It is the perfect accent to any outfit and any color. My favorite go-to leopard items are my leopard scarf and my leopard flats. You literally can never go wrong!

Taboo Topics | Depression

Brought to you by Allegra at Hints of Joy...

Over the summer, I hit a rough patch. I felt really down, and the lower I felt, the less I did to try to help myself.

It wasn’t like I just woke up one day and realized I was down. It was slower, more like a slow descent into sadness and anxiety.

Slowly, I started skipping exercise, yoga practice, and vitamins. I started eating more junk food, and having a lot less fun.

Inside, I felt terrible, but on the outside I was going to work, being productive, and interacting with people everyday.

I was depressed.

Thankfully, I had the resources to reach out and talk about how I was feeling. I was also able to start taking small steps and started feeling better.

I was really lucky – my depression passed by itself.

But that’s not always the case.

The truth is that depression exists on a spectrum, ranging from feeling down to being clinically depressed to the point of needing help from a psychiatrist and potentially medication.

The other truth is that being down, feeling low, or having clinical depression isn’t outwardly visible like breaking a bone is.

You can’t necessarily look at someone and see that they have depression, and if you’re experiencing depression, others can’t see how you’re feeling.

What’s more, it isn’t often considered acceptable or safe to talk about what’s happening.

It’s a tough scene – feeling down and having society tell you to “shake it off,” or “keep a stiff upper lip.”

You can’t just snap out of it, and you shouldn’t be pressured to.

It isn’t as simple as just changing how you feel.

Whether it’s a chemical imbalance in your brain, or something else that you believe, changing your emotional experience in a split second isn’t realistic.
So what can you do?
  1. Acknowledge what you’re experiencing. You are a person. You have emotions and an internal life, and it’s important to recognize your experience.
  2. Take small steps – if you’re feeling up to it, go for a walk, take your vitamins (if you had before), take time for self care.
  3. Reach out to friends and family. Or just one friend. Say hi. If you feel comfortable, talk about how you’re feeling. Often, people want to be there for you.
  4. If you aren’t feeling better, or feel like you’re feeling more down, reach out to a mental health professional. There are people out there who can help. Remember that you don’t have to pick the first counselor or doctor you meet with. Find someone with whom you feel comfortable. Try www.psychologytoday.com for lists of mental health professionals in your area.
There is nothing shameful about depression.  It is not because you are weak, or confused, or whatever the world tells us about mental health. There are so many negative perceptions of depression, and sometimes it seems as though people are angry or scared to even talk about depression. But we should talk about it. It’s important to recognize and acknowledge not only our own experience and the experiences of those we love, but of those in the world.

Things are never permanent. They come and go. If you’re feeling down, it can pass. If it doesn’t, though, remember that you have the power. Remember that you can make the choice to seek help. You know yourself better than anyone else.

Blogger Spotlight: Anna of Hello, Handbag

Excited to bring you another amazing blogger spotlight! Let's meet Anna!

Tell us a little about yourself.
First, hello to my fellow Kindly with K fans and thank you Kourtney for having me today! I first met Kourtney though Instagram where she posts lovely photos that make me want to take a walk in her shoes. It's such a treat to be here and to meet all of you!

My name is Anna, and I'm a blogger at Hello, Handbag. I write about a mix of fashion (like in Emma Watson, Stella McCartney and Friends Tackle Gender Inequality in Fashion) and beauty (like Cindy Crawford and the Supermodel Reunion) with a focus on important issues like body diversity and beauty standards. I'm a big fan of travel, street art, and of course bags. I live in LA with my husband and two beautiful dogs (look how cute they are!).

What inspired or motivated you to first start your blog?
I started Hello, Handbag because I wasn't finding anything non-commercial about the kinds of bags that fit my lifestyle - I could find reviews out there about Prada and Louis Vuitton, or even Target and Forever 21, but I couldn't find anything about brands I really loved like Kate Spade or Rebecca Minkoff. Hello, Handbag became an outlet for my love for handbags, and wanting to share those better quality bags with a chic community.

Actually that's only half true, and since I love you so much I'll tell you the real story. I'm a big fan of green tea and have been drinking it for so long I often have it in the evenings with no ill effects. Well, one night I tried a new type of green tea (Harney and Sons genmaicha, yum) and it kicked my butt! I have insomnia already, but this kept me up until the crack of dawn. In the wee hours I found myself doing some online shopping (can I get an amen?) which is when I discovered that I couldn't find what I was looking for. That's when Hello, Handbag was born. Fun fact - my very first post was published at 2:15am!

Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
I blog part time and I love it. During the day I work at UCLA (go Bruins!) but at night I get to indulge my passion for style and social justice all at the same time. I actually started as a blogger more than five years ago with a website focused on "saving the world." I loved what I was writing about but I found it was too specific for my varied interests. Now with Hello, Handbag, I get to write about fun things like New York Fashion Week as well as more serious topics like non-traditionally beautiful women. I find that my work community and my blogger community each influence the other, which keeps me feeling fulfilled.

What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?
My absolute favorite thing about being a blogger is the community. I've met so many inspiring women (like Kourtney!). I'm lucky to live in LA where there are a lot of blogging events so I enjoy getting a glass of champagne with old and new friends. But this community is unique because you can create a close friendship with someone across the street or across the world! And I've never met a more supportive group of people. Introduce me to a blogger and you've introduced me to a friend for life.

What do you hope your readers walk away with after reading your blog?
I hope that when you read my blog you feel like you have permission to be you. Maybe you don't look like the people in the magazines (neither do I!) and I bet your gorgeous and wonderful. Cindy Crawford is beautiful, and so are Madeline Stuart (who has Down syndrome), Elizaveta Bulokhova (who lost her jaw to cancer), Chante Burkett (a plus sized blogger) and Sarah Kanney (who has a "port wine stain" birthmark on her face).

Are there any people, or other bloggers, you see as examples or to whom you aspire to?
I'd like to be a bit more like like Kaarin Vembar from True To Style, a blogger and podcaster out of DC. She is one of the best stylists out there because she pulls inspiration from so many places - work with her and you'll develop a recognizable style all your own. But more importantly,  Kaarin suffers from excruciatingly painful nerve damage in her leg. Yet somehow she keeps posting and sharing her talents with others. Her courage and stick-to-itiveness inspires me.

If I could be a fictional person, without hesitation I would be Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway) from The Devil Wears Prada. Andy is talented, good at identifying and fixing her own mistakes, and makes the people around her better. Also she gets to be with Adrian Grenier which is not terrible.

What advice would you give those who want to go into blogging?
Be consistent. The best parts of blogging, like money and new friends, come from consistency.

Five fun facts!
1 // I'm the proud adoptive mom to a baby elephant named Quanza, who lives at an elephant orphanage in Kenya. I got to visit her two years ago during a volunteer trip and my life was forever changed.

2 // I sit on the board of a nonprofit called Hats Off For Cancer, we give hats to kids who lose their hair to cancer treatments.
3 // I have two favorite bags. One is a Marc by Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Groovee satchel that my mom and sister gave me for graduation. The other is a Kate Spade Little Minka in Affogato (a delectable creamy beige color) that was given to me by my husband.
4 // I run a fashion book club and I'd love for you to join us! Every month we pick a book and get together virtually to chat about it. Our first book was Blogging Your Way to the Front Row by Yuli Ziv. If you'd like to join, send me a tweet at @Hello_Handbag!
5 // I love chicken wings. Like, really really love chicken wings. I'd love to try your favorite places, please leave a comment below!

Hammock Pack - Your Doorstop Getaway

Happy Monday everyone!! I have been dying to share with you a great new subscription box that is perfect for the person that dreams of traveling, but can't always make it happen - which by the way is me at the moment!!

Hammock Pack is a monthly surprise pack filled with unique, hard-to-find items made by small businesses! Enjoy a selection of products that are local to each monthly destination. You won't find your run-of-the- mill souvenirs on these trips but instead beautiful, locally made goods. Geared toward women, each pack is filled with a mix of food, bath products, housewares, and accessories you’ll only find while visiting each city.

I was lucky enough to discover Philadelphia through a nicely curated selection of items sent directly to my door thanks to the amazing people at Hammock Pack!
The four items that were in the box were a perfect glimpse of what Philadelphia would have to offer if I was actually able to make it there. I really like the fact that Hammock Pack chooses unique items made by small businesses because that is how you really get a feel for a city when you're traveling, so for them to bring that to your doorstep is pretty amazing! #ShopSmall is the way to go!
One of the other cool things about Hammock Pack is that along with your goodies, you can go online and they have city guides to accompany each getaway! I have definitely added Philadelphia to my travel bucket list after reading Making History in Philadelphia: A Girl's Guide to the City.
My favorite product though has to be the Hand in Hand Rose Water Lip Balm! Not only does it make my lips feel and smell wonderful, but Hand in Hand donates one bar of soap and one month of clean water to a child in the developing world for every lip balm purchased.

If you're like me and don't have the ability to travel at your convenience, Hammock Pack is the way to go! For only $32 a month, you can have a getaway at your doorstop!! For more information, please visit HammockPack.com!

I'm Back!! Life Lately...

Hi everyone! I can't believe it's been over a month since I have posted. To say my life has been crazy is the understatement of the year. Starting grad school and entering the teacher credential program has been the most stressful, yet most amazing experience. Unfortunately through all the craziness, Kindly With K got put on the back burner. But I am back!! Because truthfully I miss connecting with everyone and having a platform to share my thoughts and ideas. So while I can't promise that I will post everyday, I do promise that I will not be going months in between posts! Since that is out of the way, here's what I've been up to lately...

1. Started my teaching credential program at the University of California, Irvine and am currently splitting my time between classes at UCI and teaching at my placement site!
2. I am placed at the most wonderful high school where I am teaching Integrated Math II. It has been such a rewarding experience thus far and I could not be prouder of how great my students are doing.
3. When I'm not in class or teaching, you can usually find me doing homework, grading papers or sleeping!
4. AND the most important part of my life lately is my new puppy!!! Yes you read that right...I GOT A PUPPY! Introducing Miss Maisy Mae...
I am so excited to be back and I want to hear what everyone else has been up to! Leave me a comment or feel free to shoot me an email at kindlywithk{at}gmail.com! Can't wait to hear from everyone!
